Early Signs of Type 2 Diabetes: What to Watch For
Type 2 diabetes often develops gradually, and many people don't realize they have it until complications appear. Dr. Suman R explains the early warning signs that should prompt a blood sugar check.
The Most Common Early Signs
1. Frequent Urination (Polyuria)
When blood sugar is high, the kidneys work overtime to filter and absorb the excess glucose. When they can't keep up, the glucose is excreted into urine, dragging fluids from your tissues with it. This leads to more frequent urination, especially at night.
2. Excessive Thirst (Polydipsia)
As you lose more fluid through frequent urination, you become dehydrated and feel constantly thirsty. Many patients report drinking much more water than usual without feeling satisfied.
3. Increased Hunger (Polyphagia)
Even though you're eating, your cells aren't getting the glucose they need because of insulin resistance. This can cause persistent hunger shortly after meals.
4. Unexplained Fatigue
When your cells can't access glucose properly, your body lacks energy. This leads to persistent tiredness that doesn't improve with rest or sleep.
5. Blurred Vision
High blood sugar can cause the lens of the eye to swell, temporarily affecting your ability to focus. If left uncontrolled, this can progress to more serious eye damage.
6. Slow-Healing Wounds
High glucose levels affect blood circulation and impair the immune system's ability to heal wounds. Cuts, sores, and infections may take much longer to heal than normal.
7. Tingling or Numbness
Excess sugar in the blood can damage nerves, causing tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy).
8. Dark Patches of Skin
Acanthosis nigricans β dark, velvety patches of skin, often on the neck, armpits, or groin β can be a sign of insulin resistance.
Who Should Be Screened?
Dr. Suman R recommends regular diabetes screening for:
- Adults over 35 years with a family history of diabetes
- Individuals with BMI above 23 (Indian threshold)
- Women with a history of gestational diabetes
- People with high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol
- Those with a sedentary lifestyle
- Women with PCOS
What to Do If You Notice These Signs
If you're experiencing two or more of these symptoms, Dr. Suman R advises getting a fasting blood sugar test and HbA1c done as soon as possible. Early detection means early intervention β and in many cases, type 2 diabetes can be put into remission through lifestyle changes.
